Reopening of Family Detention Centers
Family detention centers are not new—they have existed since the Obama administration and were used extensively during Trump’s first term. Now, the current administration is working to reopen these centers as part of a larger strategy for mass deportations. These centers would detain undocumented parents and children together while they undergo deportation proceedings.
Key Points:
U.S. citizen children should not be held in these centers. If this happens, it would be a violation of their rights.
Currently, there is one active center in Texas, with another planned to open soon.
Illinois does not have family detention centers, but detained families could be transferred to Texas.
Federal Registration Mandate
The administration has proposed a mandatory registration for immigrants, requiring them to register with the federal government. However, details are still emerging, and there is currently no official process for registration.
What You Need to Know:
There is no existing registration process yet—do not attempt to register.
Final rules will be issued by April 11, providing clearer guidance.
The registry may include penalties such as fines and possible jail time.
Every case is different, so individuals should assess their own situations carefully before taking any action.
DACA: What’s Happening?
DACA continues to be debated in the courts. Recently, a Fifth Circuit Court ruling suggested that applications should be reviewed, but it remains uncertain whether USCIS will begin processing them.
For DACA Recipients:
If you are renewing, continue to do so as soon as possible.
If you are applying for the first time, be aware that applications may not be processed.
Renewal Tip: You can apply for renewal one year before your current DACA status expires to avoid lapses in protection.
Increased Scrutiny at Ports of Entry
More individuals with legal status in the U.S. are being detained upon re-entry, with immigration officials reviewing their cases more closely.
What You Should Know:
Any non-citizen re-entering the U.S. is subject to questioning by immigration officers.
Increased scrutiny may include past criminal records, even for incidents that happened many years ago.
Those with any legal concerns should consult an attorney before traveling outside the U.S.
Always inform a trusted person of your travel details in case of unexpected delays.
