Statement on Mayor Johnson’s Congressional Testimony Defending Chicago’s Sanctuary Status
On March 5, 2025, several mayors, including Chicago’s Mayor Brandon Johnson, testified before the U.S. House Oversight and Government Reform Committee regarding Chicago’s status as a Sanctuary City. In his opening remarks, Mayor Johnson emphasized that “one in five residents is foreign-born” and highlighted Chicago as “a proud city of immigrants.”
Chicago’s Welcoming City Ordinance ensures that the city will not inquire about an individual's immigration status, will not disclose that information to authorities, and will not deny city services based on immigration status. For the past 40 years, our city has consistently reaffirmed its commitment to Chicagoans of all races, ethnicities, immigration statuses, gender identities, and sexual orientations. “Let me be clear: Chicago’s Welcoming City ordinance and our other laws and policies do not lead to more crime; they do not prevent cooperation with federal law enforcement on criminal matters, and we do not harbor criminals. We arrest them often, because of laws that allow residents to feel safe in helping the police,” stated Johnson.
We commend the mayor for urging Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform. His message reaffirmed that in Chicago, we are “educated,” as Border Czar Tom Homan referred to our residents, and that fear-mongering from the current administration will not deter us from protecting our immigrant families.
